The Granny Smith Apple originated in 1868 from Maria”Granny” Smith who found them growing near a creek by her farm in Tasmania. They are believed to be a hybrid of a crab apple, but Granny Smiths have been growing from their own breed of seeds for over 100 years.
They are a very popular cooking apple because Granny Smiths do not lose their shape and the high acid content gives a wonderful flavor to pies and desserts.
